Camp host, Howard Smith

Howard Smith (left) is a Navajo born of the Todachine' clan for the Tacheenie clan, and is of the people of the Tsegi area of Canyon de Chelly. Raised in the area of Spider Rock Campground, he grew up herding sheep throughout the canyon, along the south rim and at the canyon bottom. Many of Howard's family members still live in and around Canyon de Chelly.

Howard has opened his home to visitors by creating this campground and enjoys sharing his knowledge with the many people that come to stay in his campground. Howard's willingness to share the culture of the Navajo people is reflected in his guided tours as well as the natural setting of the campground.
